Welcome to the official start of your crypto security journey. Setting up your Ledger device via Ledger.com/Start ensures your digital assets are protected with industry-leading security. Whether you’re new to crypto or a seasoned investor, this guide will help you get started in just a few simple steps.
A hardware wallet like Ledger stores your private keys offline, protecting them from hacks, phishing, and malware. Unlike hot wallets or exchanges, you remain in full control of your crypto assets.
With Ledger, you can:
Securely manage over 5,000 coins and tokens
Connect to popular apps like MetaMask and Coinbase Wallet
Use the Ledger Live app to buy, sell, swap, and stake crypto
When you unbox your Ledger Nano S Plus or Nano X, you should find:
The Ledger device
A USB-C cable
Recovery sheets
A keychain or strap (varies by model)
Instruction manual
Always make sure your box is sealed and came from an official source to avoid tampered devices.
Open the official site in your browser. Never use unofficial links or click on ads — phishing scams are common.
Ledger Live is the companion app for your device. Download it from the official site for:
Windows
macOS
Linux
iOS / Android
Do not download Ledger Live from any third-party app stores or websites.
Plug your Ledger device into your computer or mobile using the provided cable. Follow the on-screen instructions on both the device and the Ledger Live app.
Create a 4 to 8-digit PIN directly on your Ledger device. This PIN protects your device from unauthorized access. Memorize it and never share it.
Your device will now display a 24-word recovery phrase — this is your only backup to restore your wallet if the device is lost or damaged.
⚠️ IMPORTANT:
Write down the phrase in order on the provided recovery sheet.
Store it in a secure, offline place.
Never take a photo, save it on your phone/computer, or share it with anyone.
If someone gets your recovery phrase, they can take all your crypto.
You’ll be asked to confirm the words to ensure you’ve written them down correctly. Take your time — this step is crucial.
In Ledger Live:
Go to Manager
Install the apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum)
Each app takes space on your device, so only install what you use.
Under the Accounts tab in Ledger Live:
Click Add Account
Choose the crypto you want
Verify the address on your device and start receiving funds
You can now send, receive, swap, stake, and monitor your crypto portfolio securely.
Always double-check addresses on the device screen before sending funds.
Update firmware regularly via Ledger Live for new features and security patches.
Use Ledger Live only from Ledger.com.
Consider a steel backup for your recovery phrase to protect it from fire or water damage.
Never share your 24-word phrase with anyone, even Ledger support.
